Coding for Cash or Compliance: Can you do both?
On March 16, 2007, CodeRyte sponsored an educational program at the CPU Users’ Conference in San Diego, California. The session started with a presentation by Karen Collier, Esq., the Corporate Compliance Officer for Medical Consultants, Inc. Karen’s presentation provided the group with valuable information about coding functions and practices and how they fit into an organization’s overall compliance program. A lively discussion followed about how best to implement these ideas in real-world settings.

Discusstion topics included:

  • How do you discover your organization’s compliance responsibilities?
  • What’s the value of having a compliance plan in place?
  • What constitutes an effective compliance plan from the payors’ point of view?
  • What are the key steps to designing and implementing a compliance plan in your organization?
  • How do you put an effective plan in place without spending a lot of money?
  • How do different approaches to coding medical records reduce or increase risk?
  • What coding statistics are “red flags” for an OIG audit?
  • Is there a tradeoff between good compliance and optimal reimbursements?
  • What strategies increase your compliance and improve your collections at the same time?

The panel was moderated by Rick Toren, President of CodeRyte. Other panel members included:

  • Brian Castleberry – Billing Director, Montgomery Radiology Associates.
